MAAC brings basketball, dollars, to Albany
ALBANY, N.Y. – Next week’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) championships will bring much more than basketball to downtown Albany.
It is expected that the MAAC basketball championships will generate a whopping $2.2 million for the local economy.
That’s because 2,645 hotel rooms will be booked, while direct sales are expected to top $1.36 million and indirect sales another $900,000.
The tournament, which is being played March 5-9, is coming back to Albany after a four-year absence.
And it is booked to stay in Albany for the next three years.
The regional manager for SMG, the Philadelphia company that manages the Times Union Center in Albany, said the goal is to bring more tournaments like MAAC to the city.
