Crown Holdings to bottle up 160+ jobs in Tioga County
TIOGA COUNTY, N.Y. — Crown Holdings, a global leader in metal packaging technology, recently announced it will build a new $132 million manufacturing facility in Tioga County, creating more than 160 new jobs in the Southern Tier.
“Smart investments in advanced manufacturing are driving growth in the Southern Tier and further cementing New York’s position as a global leader in 21st-century technology and innovation,” said Gov. Andrew Cuomo. “This new facility will create good-paying jobs in the Southern Tier and will help move the region forward.”
Crown Holdings is a publicly-traded company that services a broad spectrum of markets – both nationally and internationally – in the beverage, food, health and beauty, household, industrial, luxury good, and promotional industries. Crown’s headquarters are located in Philadelphia, and the company employs approximately 23,000 people worldwide.
The company’s new facility will be located at the Tioga County Industrial Park in the Town of Nichols. Crown Holdings will invest $132.8 million to build the new two-line beverage can manufacturing facility, and create at least 164 new jobs by 2018. The expansion will increase the company’s current production capacity for specialty beverage cans, allowing them to better service strategic North American markets. Crown’s presence in New York also provides the potential for further development in the Southern Tier.
Crown Holdings made it clear that incentives offered by the respective states were key to their considerations during the site selection process; and as such, New York offered a package of performance-based incentives. This includes up to $8.1 million in Excelsior Jobs Program tax credits and a capital grant of up to $6.9 million. In return, the company plans to invest heavily in the new facility and create and maintain at least 164 new jobs in the Southern Tier.
The project is also receiving local support in the form of a PILOT through the Tioga County Industrial Development Agency. Additionally, Crown Holdings has been working with New York State Electric & Gas Corporation (NYSEG) to facilitate utility installations at the project site, and NYSEG will provide an economic development Energy Infrastructure Grant to assist with these efforts.
This project directly aligns with the Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council’s Strategic Plan; specifically, efforts to build up the region’s advanced manufacturing sector and establish it as a global leader for next generation development. The project works in direct coordination with the region’s Opportunity Agenda to move impoverished populations into the workforce by pursuing projects and initiatives that create opportunity for new jobs and skills training. Furthermore, this project advances both the governor’s Opportunity Initiative and the Global NY Initiative in the Southern Tier, generating new economic opportunities while expanding exports and foreign investment.
